Every figure shown for Germany is reproducible from the two official datasets below. Step 1 is the national wage published by the OECD, step 2 is the sector pay ratio derived from Eurostat national accounts, and step 3 is our own arithmetic combining them.
Step 1 — OECD
OECD — Average annual wages (AV_AN_WAGE)
€54,840 — Germany (DEU), reference year 2025
Average annual wages per full-time equivalent dependent employee, current prices, national currency.
Step 2 — Eurostat
Eurostat — National accounts by industry (nama_10_a64, nama_10_a64_e)
Total — all NACE activities (whole economy) — ratio 1.00 (the national average is used as published)
Compensation of employees divided by employees per NACE Rev.2 activity, used to derive sector pay ratios relative to the whole economy.
Step 3 — our calculation
Official national wage used on this page
€54,840 per year (gross)
Monthly values divide the annual figure by 12, hourly values divide it by 2,080 working hours. No adjustment is made for exchange rates, taxes, cost of living or purchasing power.
national average wage (OECD) × sector pay ratio (Eurostat) = gross annual sector benchmark
Sector figures are modelled estimates, not directly measured country-specific sector salaries. This is a statistical benchmark, not a determination of whether you are fairly paid. Actual compensation varies by experience, location, role, employer, working hours, benefits and other factors.
Read the full methodology →About Germany's labour market
Germany's labour market is shaped by its industrial core — automotive, mechanical engineering, chemicals — alongside a large and growing services sector, and pay varies more by sector and region than almost anywhere else in Western Europe. A software engineer in Munich or a chemicals specialist near Ludwigshafen can out-earn the national average considerably, while pay in the former East German states still trails the West on average, decades after reunification.
Germany's tax system is progressive and layered with substantial social insurance contributions — health, pension, unemployment and long-term care insurance — split between employer and employee. One feature specific to Germany is the Steuerklasse (tax class) system: it doesn't change how much tax you ultimately owe for the year, but it determines how much is withheld from each paycheck, which matters most for married couples choosing between classes to optimise their monthly cash flow rather than their annual liability. This is a common source of confusion for newcomers, and our net salary calculator applies the underlying average rate rather than modelling every Steuerklasse combination.
Germany's collective bargaining tradition (Tarifvertrag) means many sectors have negotiated pay scales that sit above statutory minimums, so a benchmark figure is best read as a starting point for negotiation, not a ceiling — particularly in unionised industries.

Questions about the benchmark
What is the average salary in Germany?
+
The average gross salary in Germany is €54,840 per year (2025 reference data from OECD and Eurostat earnings statistics) — about €4,570 gross per month, or €26 per hour over a standard 2080-hour working year. Pick your sector in the calculator above to refine the benchmark.
Which sector pays the most in Germany?
+
Of the 13 sectors tracked for Germany, Finance & Insurance currently shows the highest benchmark at €96,628 gross per year, well above the national cross-industry average of €54,840.
Should I use gross or net salary for a comparison in Germany?
+
All comparisons use gross annual salary — the amount agreed in your employment contract before income tax and social contributions. Net pay differs enormously between countries with similar gross pay, so gross is the only fair basis for cross-border comparison. For roles in Germany, keep the comparison on a gross-pay basis. You can enter either gross or net pay using the toggle above the calculator — the comparison itself is always done on a gross basis behind the scenes, so your result stays accurate either way.
Why did my result change slightly when I switched between Gross and Net?
+
Small differences (usually a few cents to a few euros) can appear when switching back and forth between Gross and Net, because each conversion rounds to the nearest whole currency unit. This is a normal effect of rounding, not an error — your actual benchmark comparison and percentage remain accurate.
