Want an even more precise calculation?

CheckMyPayRate focuses on cross-border gross salary comparison using OECD and Eurostat data. For your exact local net (take-home) pay — which depends on personal tax brackets, social security rules and family status — these country-specific calculators go deeper into local tax law.

How it works

Enter your gross salary and country. We find your position relative to that country's OECD-published average wage, then interpolate between the nearest official OECD Taxing Wages tax brackets (available at every 1% increment from 50% to 250% of the average wage) to estimate your net personal average tax rate — more accurate than applying one flat rate to every income level.

Worked example

An $80,000 salary in the US, where the OECD average wage is $73,520 — your salary sits at 108.81% of the average. Interpolating between the nearest tax brackets gives an estimated rate of 25.28%, for a net salary of $59,775.

FAQ

Why does this differ from the ×1.35-style rough multiplier I've seen elsewhere?

+

Multipliers like that ignore how progressive tax systems actually work — this tool interpolates real published tax-bracket data specific to your income level relative to the national average, rather than applying one number to everyone.

Does this account for my specific family situation?

+

No — this uses the OECD baseline for a single person with no children. Married couples, parents, and other household types typically face different effective rates.

What if my salary is far outside the average range?

+

If you're below 50% or above 250% of the national average wage, the calculator uses the nearest available bracket and shows a note that the result may be less precise outside that range.

Limitations

This is an average effective tax rate for a defined baseline household, not a personalised tax calculation — it doesn't account for deductions, family status, or income from other sources. Treat it as a well-sourced estimate, not a substitute for a tax professional or official calculator for filing purposes.
