Every figure shown for Ireland is reproducible from the two official datasets below. Step 1 is the national wage published by the OECD, step 2 is the sector pay ratio derived from Eurostat national accounts, and step 3 is our own arithmetic combining them.

  1. Step 1 — OECD

OECD — Average annual wages (AV_AN_WAGE)

    €63,379 — Ireland (IRL), reference year 2025

Average annual wages per full-time equivalent dependent employee, current prices, national currency.

  2. Step 2 — Eurostat

Eurostat — National accounts by industry (nama_10_a64, nama_10_a64_e)

Total — all NACE activities (whole economy) — ratio 1.00 (the national average is used as published)

Compensation of employees divided by employees per NACE Rev.2 activity, used to derive sector pay ratios relative to the whole economy.

  3. Step 3 — our calculation

Official national wage used on this page

    €63,379 per year (gross)

Monthly values divide the annual figure by 12, hourly values divide it by 2,080 working hours. No adjustment is made for exchange rates, taxes, cost of living or purchasing power.

national average wage (OECD) × sector pay ratio (Eurostat) = gross annual sector benchmark

Sector figures are modelled estimates, not directly measured country-specific sector salaries. This is a statistical benchmark, not a determination of whether you are fairly paid. Actual compensation varies by experience, location, role, employer, working hours, benefits and other factors.

About Ireland's labour market

Ireland's labour market is unusually dual: a cluster of major US technology and pharmaceutical multinationals (Google, Meta, Pfizer and others have European headquarters here, drawn partly by Ireland's low corporate tax rate) pays wages well above the national average, particularly in Dublin, while the rest of the economy looks more typical of a mid-sized European country.

Take-home pay in Ireland is shaped by three separate deductions: PAYE income tax, USC (Universal Social Charge, a separate tax on gross income), and PRSI (social insurance contributions) — three lines on a payslip where most countries on this site have one or two. Dublin's housing costs have risen sharply over the past decade, driven partly by the same multinational hiring boom that lifted local wages, so the wage premium and the cost premium are closely linked rather than independent.

Outside Dublin, both wages and cost of living drop meaningfully, making a national average less representative here than in most other countries covered on this site.

Questions about the benchmark

What is the average salary in Ireland?

+

The average gross salary in Ireland is €63,379 per year (2025 reference data from OECD and Eurostat earnings statistics) — about €5,282 gross per month, or €30 per hour over a standard 2080-hour working year. Pick your sector in the calculator above to refine the benchmark.

Which sector pays the most in Ireland?

+

Of the 13 sectors tracked for Ireland, IT & Software currently shows the highest benchmark at €94,308 gross per year, well above the national cross-industry average of €63,379.

Should I use gross or net salary for a comparison in Ireland?

+

All comparisons use gross annual salary — the amount agreed in your employment contract before income tax and social contributions. Net pay differs enormously between countries with similar gross pay, so gross is the only fair basis for cross-border comparison. For roles in Ireland, keep the comparison on a gross-pay basis. You can enter either gross or net pay using the toggle above the calculator — the comparison itself is always done on a gross basis behind the scenes, so your result stays accurate either way.

Why did my result change slightly when I switched between Gross and Net?

+

Small differences (usually a few cents to a few euros) can appear when switching back and forth between Gross and Net, because each conversion rounds to the nearest whole currency unit. This is a normal effect of rounding, not an error — your actual benchmark comparison and percentage remain accurate.
